Renovation Project

Plans are underway!

Renovation Project News

The Library Board of Trustees has hired Baybutt Construction Managers to oversee the renovations, with John Edwards serving as project manager.  This fall the Library Renovation Committee will meet with representatives from Baybutt Construction and SMP Architecture to finalize the design and project specifications.  In December and January preparations will be made for the project to go out to bid.  Construction is estimated to begin in April 2012 and run through September.

How did this project take shape?

Two years ago a mold and asbestos remediation was completed in two basement rooms, which led to a thorough “Conditions Assessment;” a Renovation Committee was then formed, and a professional architectural firm—SMP Architecture—was hired to help plan for these goals: 1) Repair the building & prevent further deterioration; 2) Make the building healthy, safe & up to code; 3) Provide handicapped access to enable the use of all rooms & floors by everyone; &  4) Insulate the building & install energy-efficient heating & electrical systems for cost savings.

In May of 2011, Rockingham residents approved the bond to pay for the Library Renovation, which will completely modernize and restore the historic 100-year-old Carnegie Library.

Why renovate?

The Library is the Town’s ‘Jewel in the Crown’ for the public service it provides: from  education to cultural enrichment to technology access, the Library serves as a vital community center for all.  Last year there was a 15% increase in card holders, 52,446 items were lent out, and 455 programs were held, attended by 11,695 children & adults, a 25% increase in attendance!
